There’s something really elegant about double exposure. It lets a variety of images pass through the subject, conveying an expanse within us. Come to think of it, that’s exactly what this piece is about: every one of us contains an entire history, whether we know it or not. At any moment, we exist in and are perceived as having an extensive legacy of social and political moments, all passing through us. What better way to depict this expansive nature than a visual style that does exactly that?
This piece is punctuated by moments of silence, rest, and breath. My hope is that it moves my audience to think about the historical oppression of black folk, and how that manifests today. And, beyond that, to be inspired to take action through one of the few ways regular people can in our society: vote.
Reflections on Peace and Justice Organizing
Cinematographer, Editor, Animator
Produced: October 2021
Client: Peace Development Fund
Reaching its 40th anniversary, Peace Development Fund wanted to look back at its storied history. I worked with them for close to a year, conducting interviews with their members past & present at their organization to learn the nuances of their work.
This film is a love letter to PDF’s vital work as a grantmaker and capacity building organization.
My Family's Curse
Director, Writer, Narrator, Videographer, Video Editor
Produced: July 2019
Client: Community Change, Washington D.C.
When I was sent off to college, I saw a world of hope in my mom’s eyes - to break my family’s curse. As a first gen college grad, I’ve seen that world come to life, but part of me still has lingering questions about college in America.
I recently partnered with Community Change as a video fellow, and in this film I discuss what merit means in American society as a young minority.
For this project, I wanted to stay on brand with Community Change’s mission of giving a voice to underrepresented voices and stories. I focused on an authentic set of experiences and questions, and used timelapses and other cinematic techniques to add depth to the narrative.
